Your True Purpose Is Where You Give the Most Love

A dialogue on the heart, with Roberta Boyce and Dallas Gudgell.

“How can you be truly living through your soul and your spirit’s intention, and have that devoid of love?” — Roberta Boyce.

Resonant World #122

I can’t think of a better time of year to share a dialogue on the power of the heart.

The Enter the Way of Wisdom sessions that I held with Dallas Gudgell and Roberta Boyce have been among my highlights of the year.

This fourth and final exploration in this series brought forth insights that feel as fresh to me now as they did when we met some months ago.

The best way to absorb the energy is to listen to the above recording.

If your time is short, then I’d like to offer a snippet from our exchange on living with purpose — a core concern of my work in Resonant World, and its sister publications

(with ) and .

We could spend a lot of time debating ideas about ‘purpose’: Do we have an innate purpose? Are we free to choose our purpose? Might ideas about purpose obscure deeper truths about the nature of existence? And so on.

Roberta cut through this kind of speculation by observing:

Purpose without love surely is not purpose.”

Roberta added:

“Your purpose comes from the heart, otherwise it is not your purpose. That doesn’t mean that it’s got no value, but if you really are truly seeking out what your purpose is in life, then it is also how you are going to give the most love. How are you going to be authentic in the giving and receiving of love?”

In all the talks I’ve heard, and all the retreats I’ve attended, that have addressed questions of life purpose, I’ve rarely heard such a deep truth spoken so simply and directly.

Each of the four dialogues offered its own kind of nourishment, but Roberta’s commentary on love and purpose seemed to me to be a pivotal moment in our process — and was perhaps the message that I had most needed to hear.

Dallas spoke for all three of us when he concluded our dialogue:

“My heart is full and overflowing — in a good way. There’s so much possibility with this kind of love — the Big Love — and having our heart space opened, and connecting with that, the possibilities are endless. I’m feeling gratitude, and excitement.”

Those feel like resonant words with which to close this first series of Enter the Way of Wisdom.

I wish everyone an equally resonant Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Other themes we explored in the heart dialogue included:

  • What does it mean to open, speak and live from the heart?

  • The heart space as a doorway to spirit

  • Egoic vs heart-centered seeking on the spiritual path

  • Engaging in difficult conversations

  • How trauma distorts our perceptions

  • Cultivating self-compassion and “pre-forgiveness”

  • Physically dropping into the heart space before speaking

  • Role of the heart and ‘Big Love’ in Dakota cosmology

  • The heart as receiver for the ‘Love of God’

  • Heart as the mediator of energies from heaven and earth

  • Gatherings of minds vs gatherings of hearts

  • Hearts forming networks of collective intelligence

  • Heart as a mediator of ancestral connection

  • Role of the heart in processing trauma

  • True purpose comes from the heart

  • How Dakota prayers honour interconnectedness

  • There is no true power that is not love
