Resonant World #71
A few weeks ago, inspired by my experiences during an online retreat with Thomas Hübl and team, I had a go at identifying some of the hallmarks of an authentic process of trauma integration. (Resonant World#63).
That exercise reminded me of the value of the spiral as a metaphor for healing.
So often, however hard we work on ourselves, we encounter moments when we feel stuck, or like we’re going round in circles. (Resonant World#64).
Thinking about our process as a spiral provides a new perspective.
It may seem from one angle that we’re treading the same weary ground.
But when we we take a step back, we see that it only appears that we’re stuck — in fact, we’re moving to new levels at every turn (just like climbing a spiral staircase, or following the contours of a corkscrew).
Holding the image of a spiral in those moments when very young parts of ourselves are insisting that things will “never change”, or “there’s no solution,” can help us remember that trauma integration is not an event, but a process.
And that sometimes the moments that seem the most triggering or challenging, are signposts that the spiral is taking another necessary turn.
And, just as we reach the top of a spiral staircase, or the corkscrew pops open a bottle, so do we cross thresholds on the healing journey. We experience unmistakable moments when at least some of the fragmented parts of ourselves return home.
This is a new format for Resonant World: a short audio, featuring further reflections on how the spiral can serve as a resource.
(Just after I finished recording, I looked up and noticed I was standing right opposite an outdoor spiral staircase — so I’ll take that as a sign I’m on the right track, or spiral).
Work with Me: Activate your Inner Resources via the Tarot
Tarot sessions with me are powerful.
I work with the cards to connect you to the parts of yourself that know the answers you seek, and can communicate with precision via the 1,200 symbols in the Thoth Deck. It’s amazing to see what the beautiful, multi-layered imagery can unearth from just below the surface — and feel the clarity and energy that a reading can unlock.
I charge £70 / $90 for an online session that typically lasts 90 minutes, including a guided meditation to establish a coherent field linking us with the cards, a recording of the consultation, and a photo of your spread(s). Inquiries by reply to this email. Reading the Tarot is one of my absolute favourite things to do, and I love how people light up with the insights and realisations that a session evokes. (I’m a member of the Tarot Association of the British Isles and abide by its code of ethics).
Resonant World is written in the gaps between my work editing investigations at nonprofit climate news service DeSmog. It’s a huge boost when people become paid subscribers, and support of any amount affirms that my mission to support the global community of practitioners engaged in integrating individual, inter-generational and collective trauma has value. Thank you!
Yes me too - the turns of the spiral are quite tight at the moment so harder to distinguish from just stuck!
Hoping to reach that threshold moment soon…
Thank you Kxx
Something I needed to hear. Thank you.
