“How was I supposed to know? I’m not a mind-reader!”
I’m not proud of it, but I can recall times in relationships where I’ve thrown out those words to defend myself from the shame of realising that I’ve said the wrong thing — or not said the right thing — at a moment when it mattered.
And I suspect that I’m not alone.
Relationships are hard.
They touch into the deep wounds we carry from our early life — the times when we weren’t seen, met or cared for in the ways we needed.
We get triggered, and say or do things we later regret.
Or we hold ourselves back — struggling to express how we really feel, or connect at the deeper level we know is possible, but can’t always reach.
As men, when relating to one another, it’s easy for us to fall into scripted forms of interaction that — while they can be entertaining at some level — lack the kind of depth we need to feel truly supported.
And with all that’s going on in the world right now, we need to feel each other’s presence more than ever. We’re not designed to be facing these challenges alone.
None of this is anybody’s fault. Our struggles in relationships are the product of generations of social and cultural dynamics that are no long serving us — but that we can make a conscious choice to change.
That’s why myself and my great friend and collaborator Daniel Simpson, an authority on yoga philosophy and contemplative practice, are launching a new month-long course for men on November 5 called Power To Relate.
In Power To Relate, we’re going to share practical tools to support you to:
Get clearer about how you feel
Recognise your triggers — so they don’t control you
Listen at a whole new level
Find the courage to say “yes” and “no” — and really mean it
Speak from the heart and share yourself more freely
Embody more of who you really are
I’m only slightly exaggerating when I call this “mind-reading” training.
We might not necessarily develop psychic powers (at least, not in the first session), but we will find ourselves much better equipped to sense what is going on for ourselves and other people, and relate more skillfully as a result.
And, in my experience, that’s half the battle to avoiding the kind of confusion, loss of connection and exasperation that can arise when we’re out of sync.
Timeless Wisdom
My approach to this kind of work has been heavily influenced by my experience on the two-year Timeless Wisdom Training, led by Thomas Hübl, which has involved intense practice in relating with greater depth, clarity and connection than I had imagined possible. (Resonant World #47)
And I’m delighted to be once more partnering to run a men’s group with Daniel, whom I’ve witnessed evolve and metamorphosize in spectacular fashion over the last 25 years. Daniel will be drawing on a deep well of personal contemplative practice, and profound knowledge of yoga philosophy, to enrich our journey together — as well as his natural open-heartedness, and talents as an international facilitator.

Practicalities
Our small-scale group meets on Sundays via Zoom (Nov 5, 12, 19 & 26, from 7:00 - 9:00 pm, UK time).
There will be “homework” between weekly sessions, with ongoing discussions in a private WhatsApp group.
We also share helpful resources on a dedicated website, including videos with practical guidance.
