A Deep Dive with Daniel (Podcast)
A conversation about healing that neither of us could have predicted.
Resonant World now has more than 1,070 subscribers, from the United States and Australia, to South Africa and Colombia. Of these, 35 are paying supporters — to whom I’m profoundly grateful. For the price of a coffee each month, paid subscriptions make this offering sustainable. Thank you!
Resonant World #74
I met Daniel Simpson on September 1, 1998, the day we arrived at Reuters in London to start new lives as trainee reporters.
I think it’s fair to say that neither of us could have begun to imagine the conversation we recently recorded — now that Daniel is a teacher of yoga philosophy, relating ancient traditions to modern life, and I’m working as an editor at DeSmog, while trying to apply what I’m learning about trauma integration to the media.
As Daniel wrote in his introduction to our podcast on his Ancient Futures newsletter:
“Yoga philosophy talks about dealing with three kinds of pain. Broadly speaking, these relate to ourselves, to how we interact with others, and to powerful forces beyond our control. This podcast engages with all of them, and highlights communal approaches to healing.
I’ve known Matthew since 1998, when we both joined Reuters as trainee reporters. We discuss his transition from working in war zones to seeing how the world at large is a toxic environment, shaped by traumatised people and inhuman pressures.
We also talk about our inner potential to transcend such things — focusing closely on meditation and psychedelics, along with other therapies used to treat trauma. Tune in to face up to what troubles us, both individually and as a species!”
While I love Daniel as a friend, I’m also a huge admirer of how he’s built a highly successful platform to share the essence of the wisdom traditions he’s embodied through years of personal practice and academic study.
In the two-year Timeless Wisdom Training with Thomas Hübl and team that I completed in December, there’s a lot of emphasis on how we can create conditions in our lives to become more “synchronized” with our soul. I feel Daniel models what it means to have the courage and vision to walk that principle in our challenging world, and felt truly honoured to be invited as a guest onto Ancient Futures.
Our conversation came very alive, and I hope you’ll find it a nourishing listen that explores some of the many ways life can throw us off balance — and how we can support each other to become more integrated and whole.
